FAQs
How do I know if I'm ready to get started on my fieldwork hours?
You must be enrolled in behavior analytic coursework before the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) allows you to start obtaining fieldwork hours.
Do I need to a be a registered behavior tehcnician to obtain fieldwork hours?
No. A registered behavior technician (RBT) is a certification that you can obtain through the BACB. You are not required to have that certification to work in the field of ABA or accrue unrestricted hours.
What populations can I work with as a BCBA after I pass the exam?
The application of ABA is limitless. The BACB requires that before you implement ABA across a population you ensure that you have the necessary knowledge and experience to work with them to provide quality ABA services. What does this mean? If you have worked in a nursing home as a case manager for the past 3 years and you pass your exam you may go back to working in the nursing home as a Clinical Director and create treatment plans for the residents in the nursing home. What you can't do? Start a new job with a population that you have never worked with before and start writing out treatment plans. You would first need to receive BCBA guidance through training or mentorship.
What are the minimum and maximum amount of hours I can accumulate with this program?
TMC currently follows both the 2022 and 2027 guidelines. If you are going to sit for the exam before January 1, 2027 you will follow the 2022 guidelines which states you can obtain between 20-130 fieldwork hours a month, with 5% to 10% supervision of hours completed through 4-6 contacts and at least 15 minutes of client observation. If you are going to sit for the exam after on or after January 1, 2027 you can obtain between 20-160 fieldwork hours a month, with 5%-7.5% supervision along with 60 minutes to 90 minutes of client observation.
How long do I have to obtain all my hours?
The board allows you to accumulate your hours within 5 years. Once you obtain your 1,500-2,000 hours and get approved to sit for the exam by the board you will have 2 years from the application date to sit for and pass the exam. You will have a total of 8 opportunities to take the exam but you will need to wait 30 days in between each test date.
